Jim joined Karnopp Petersen LLP in 1980 after practicing law in Portland for a number of years. Jim retired from the active practice of law at the end of 2012. Prior to his career in law, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force for six years as a fighter pilot.
Jim has counseled individuals and businesses from a diverse client base in the areas of corporate, business and real estate law as well as in sophisticated estate planning. He has significant experience in business and personal counseling, mergers and acquisitions and commercial contracting, as well as a technical knowledge of estate and gift tax laws. He also has served as outside General Counsel to and on the boards of two public companies with headquarters in Bend.
Jim has always been committed to serving the local community. In addition to being an active Rotarian, he has chaired Deschutes United Way and is a past Board Chair of Cascade Healthcare Community, the parent organization that owns St. Charles Medical Center - Bend and St. Charles Medical Center - Redmond. Jim is a co-founder, past Board Chair and current Board Member of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of the Cascades, a clinic providing free medical care to the uninsured residents of Deschutes County. Jim was selected by the Bend Chamber of Commerce as Bend’s Citizen of the year in 2004 for significant and lasting contributions to the Bend Community.
Jim is a “Double Duck” having received both his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Oregon.
